Using Data to Improve Care
Storyline Case Study Module - Royal College of Physicians (2018)
The Care Quality Improvement department (CQID) had previously developed a PDF 'toolkit', which aim was to inform medical professionals of the main types of data they can use for improvement of care for future patients.
This toolkit was very popular but the feedback they received was that people wanted more information on how these types of data could be used to improve their practice, and how they could learn from their own mistakes to improve the care of future patients.
To bring this toolkit to life and improve the learnning experience of the audience, working with SME's we developed the content further to not only include the types of data that could be used, but also:
considerations of how it should or should not be interpreted; and
how it can be used to help improve healthcare quality
To bring this information to life, I came up with the idea to thread inbetween the chuncks of information, a fictitious scenario based around the character of (Mrs Smith) and her family.
With the help of SME’s we developed a realistic case study, to provide an illustratative method of highlighting to clinicians where and how they could use data to improve care.
Once all the new content had been written and scripted, I then designed the whole course in storyline, keeping on brand with the College’s colours and using their iconic ‘shield’ logo in my templates and layouts.
I bought the story to life with illustrative characters (which I designed bsead on actually doctors/actors we used), animations and scripted short video’s and to keep the course visually engaging, I used smooth transitions between my menus and slides. I also used gifs where I thought would add a bit of interest.

Overall, we were very happy with the final product and it was well received by the CQID team and their targeted audience.
We were then comissioned to look at other toolkits they had on offer, to also bring them to life.
